Chapter Eleven

My rage had simmered, but didn’t fully dissipate until we’d screwed four more times. The guys hadn’t seemed to mind.

We flew back to the dragon’s nest, me in Axel’s arms, and Leonel called the others to let them know I was fine.

Once there, I ate four heaping plates of food before I was full.

Lucius rushed in, eyes searching the room until he spotted me, and then he ran over. “Are you hurt?” he asked.

I shook my head and tried to smile. “I’m fine.”

“Liar,” he accused.

I looked away from him. “I’m alive.”

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to think or feel. I had failed killing Axel, which I was glad for, yes, but did it prove that I was weak? Did these men weaken me?

Axel slid a piece of cheesecake across the table to me, smiling.

Cheesecake was my favorite.

I dug in, completely ignoring my previous thoughts.

“What’s our plan?” Lucius asked.

“We checked the place he had her, but it was a rental and he gave a fake name. Once he let her go, he disappeared. I think he will come back, now that she failed to cause the chaos he wanted,” Axel informed us.

One man had been the instigator of so much cruelty. Had he succeeded today, it could have been catastrophic for me and this city.

“I’m not strong enough to beat him,” I whispered, setting my fork down on the now empty plate.

“You’re not strong enough to beat him alone,” Leonel amended.

I walked over to him and sat in his lap. The touch of a partner instantly relaxed a Vengeance. With Leonel, it also made me feel safe. “I can’t let you get hurt.”

“We feel the same,” Axel whispered and set his hand on the side of my face.

I was a strong and independent woman. Yet here I was being coddled by men. I should have been angry at myself, but the weight of my grief increased each day.

And each day, the marks on my arms continued to grow. My promises were unfulfilled, and if I didn’t do something about them soon, it would not end well for me.

Lucius grabbed Axel’s wrist, pulling it away from my head.

“Wha—” Axel started, but he quickly shut his mouth.

Lucius turned his wrist over, and his mouth dropped open when he saw the mark. “You made him your partner?” he questioned.

I buried my face in Leonel’s chest. “Maybe.”

“Who else?” Lucius asked.

I felt Leonel shift. “Me.”

I sat back and realized he had his hand raised with a shit-eating grin on his face.

“Don’t look so happy,” I chastised him.

“But I am happy,” he argued.

“You don’t realize how painful my death is going to be,” I snapped and stood.

“Why are you so certain you’re going to die?” Lucius asked.

I clutched at my arm as a throb of pain shot through it. “He held me captive for days and I could do nothing. I think I’m just being realistic.”

Leonel stood slowly, rested his hands on my biceps, and asked, “How much time do you have left?”

“What are you talking about?” Axel snapped.
